Delicious and so decadent – these 5-ingredient no-bake chocolate covered brownies are the perfect no fuss, easy and delicious treat!
Seems like I’m currently on a chocolate marathon. I’ve been posting so many recipes recently that feature chocolate quite heavily. Not that I’ve had any complaints from you here or on my social media channels. I think it’s the time of year – it’s so cold and gloomy most days that I (and I’m sure many of you are with me on this one) need some comfort foods to keep me going!
Luckily these no-bake brownies are healthier than your average brownie – packed with fibre and healthy fats from the dates and tahini. What makes them even better is that they only call for 5 ingredients and no oven! AND they’re dipped in chocolate to make them taste even more decadent and chocolatey! They’re so hard to resist.
Many of you know by now that my 3 main ingredient obsessions are chocolate, tahini and dates – all three happen to be featured in this recipe. In fact, apart from the salt, those three are the only ingredients in this recipe!
So if you’re looking for a quick and easy recipe using healthier ingredients but still tastes absolutely delish, you need to give these5-ingredient no-bake chocolate covered brownies a try 😉
What you’ll need to make these 5-ingredient no-bake chocolate covered brownies:
Dates – Medjool dates or other soft varieties work best to help the mixture blend. If you’re using a dry date variety, you’ll need to soak them in hot water for 10 minutes to soften them.
Tahini – You can use other nut/seed butters, but tahini works really well in terms of the flavour. Runny tahini works best. I always use Lebanese tahini as it has the best consistency for desserts/baking. You can get them from Asian/ethnic shops or online.
Cocoa powder – To make them rich, chocolatey and decadent!
Salt – To help enhance the flavours
Dark chocolate – This adds an even more intense chocolatiness. You can still enjoy them without if you want a lighter brownie.
These 5-ingredient no-bake chocolate covered brownies are:
- Vegan
- Gluten-free
- Dairy-free
- Nut-free
- No-bake
- Super easy to make
- Healthier than your average brownie
- Made with only 5 ingredients
- And they’re super yummy!

What’s the topping? Which nuts are they?NadiaMarch 20, 2024 at 3:19 pm - Reply
Hi Dini 🙂 I topped them with chopped hazelnuts, but more for aesthetics, so you don’t need to use them. Or you can top it with whatever you like!

I love this recipe! I’ve made it twice. The next time I make this I have I’ll plump the dates in hot water and pat them dry before combing with the cocoa powder and tahini so I get a firmer brownie.

Aaaawesome! I love chocolate so much and can’t get vegan treats anywhere and if, they’re mostly overpriced. This seems to be a great way to have my chocolate in a cheap and delicious way! Will try them soon. Thanks ?NadiaMarch 2, 2020 at 7:19 pm - Reply

Wow! Looks so amazing! Was wondering how did you get that nice velvety finish on the chocolate coating? Do you use chocolate compound or couverture chocolate with tempering?
NadiaMarch 5, 2020 at 11:41 am - Reply
I actually didn’t use any specific method of melting the chocolate and didn’t temper it either. Just dipped it in and left it to set 😀

Hi Nadia- I have just come across your website- your recipes look great! I have never used tahini in brownies before- excuse my ignorance but is that for binding or does it give a specific taste? I’m intrigued and will definitely try them! Thank you!
NadiaMarch 5, 2020 at 11:40 am - Reply
Hi Paula 🙂 Tahini is sesame seed butter and is similar to other nut or seed butters. You can use peanut butter or almond butter if you can’t get get hold of tahini, although I would recommend it because the taste goes really well with dates 🙂

Try looking in the produce section of your grocery store. Usually in a cooked area. That’s where I find mine. Usually by the berries!

These are amazing! I knew I had intolerance to gluten. But when I was recently diagnosed with oats, eggs, milk, nuts, among 35 other things, I wondered how I would satisfy my chocolate cravings. I mean I am a serious chocoholic. Previously I ate at least I dark chocolate almond bark piece a day. I thought I could do dark chocolate dove promises but because of the milk, it left my mouth burning. Because most chocolate has milk in it I had to make my own dark chocolate from chocolate and butter (for some reason I can have butter, cheddar and cottage cheese because of the way they are processed according to the test results). I’ll have to figure out honey or agave to add as a sugar as without the sugar it was bitter; but with a little, it was gritty. Overall, my mouth it happy to have something I can eat that doesn’t make it burn like it was scalded and tastes great.AmerNovember 5, 2020 at 5:05 pm - Reply

I tried these this afternoon and they turned out much better than I had expected! Usually when I try healthy snack ideas they either don’t work or taste too healthy in my opinion… This time it was different! I used soft dates instead of medjool dates because you can’t buy these in regular supermarkets here in Germany – worked out perfectly fine, I just needed more than 13 to have 200g. 😉
Also I mixed tahin, almond butter and plain peanut butter because I was afraid using only tahin would give the brownies a very dominant sesame-flavour. Now that I’ve tried them I don’t even think that you taste the nut butter at all!
I sprinkled the brownies with crushed hazelnuts and crushed almonds and I dare to say they look really good!
I expected them to be quite sticky but the texture is actually really close to nice and gooey brownies!
A really good way to satisfy your cravings with a healthy but not too healthy-tasting snack :))MartinNovember 13, 2020 at 6:06 pm - Reply
Have you tried the recipe with figs instead of dates? Does it work? Anyway, I will inform You if ot does. The recipe is eye-catching.

High-quality dark chocolate is a great option for vegans. Look for chocolate with a cacao content of 50% or more. The higher cacao percentage indicates a higher chocolate content. … Vegans can enjoy chocolate with almonds, dried fruit, or mint, as these inclusions are often vegan-friendly. cannot wait to try.

Hi Nadia, I can’t get off your site! Best thing ever! I just wanted to ask, does it have to be Medjoul dates? Or can it be any kind of dates? XJuliaDecember 21, 2020 at 5:22 pm - Reply

*Sigh…* This was just what I needed during pregnancy. A wee bit of chocolate to curb my cravings (because I could cut them into lots of little pieces), made with dates and almond butter (a bit more nutrition and a tiny bit of fiber), and highly satisfying!
I only had to add some water to make them easier for my food processor to blend smoothly.
Interestingly enough (and maybe this is the pregnancy talking), after tasting the mixture, I thought the chocolate coating would make them TOO chocolatey–is that even a real thing?
That’s how good this recipe is!!!FabianaMay 11, 2021 at 3:52 pm - Reply

Hi Nadia…your recipes are amazing, Thank you for that! I was wondering if in your no bake brownies if instead of buying a chocolate bar for the covering if you could in fact make a mixture of cocoa powder (cacao), coconut oil and sugar, (maybe psyllium husk powder) (bees wax?)…? I’ve never used baking chocolate before…just too expensive for me…

The date mixture was too oily and liquidy, should i put less tahini next time ?
I used madjool.. then i added some more date and cocoa powder,, looks better but i can see the oil shining, really greasyWill dip it in chocolate now,, thank u, love the taste so far
NadiaJune 7, 2023 at 9:41 pm - Reply
That’s strange ? Did you mix the tahini before you added it? It can separate, so the oily part sits on top of the jar.

Wonder if could substitute avocado for the tahini? ?
NadiaOctober 19, 2022 at 12:03 pm - Reply
Hi Mary 🙂 I’m not sure how they would turn out as tahini is much runnier than mashed avocado. They may be more on the dry side. Let me know if you do try avocado and how they turn out!

love the flavor but mine were so dry and crumbly they just fell apart. They are little piles. What could have caused it?
NadiaNovember 14, 2022 at 5:09 pm - Reply
Hi Lee 🙂 That’s odd, did you use Medjool dates? If you used dry dates they won’t have enough moisture to make them sticky.
